Phases
Early Consultation
Towards the end of last year, we shared our initial vision for the redevelopment of the former Tudor Williams building with the community in New Malden. We have taken the time to review your feedback and would now like you to join us for our next stage of consultation and an update.
We were delighted with the level of interest, as over 300 people took the time to provide their feedback. Many welcomed the regeneration of the site and opportunity for a new community space on the High Street. We also had a great deal of interest in the scale and design of the proposals, as well as aspects such as parking in the area. We are grateful for all the comments to date and have sought to incorporate your ideas, where possible, into our proposals.
What you told us:
- Majority of respondents selected “Independent retailers or specialist shops – to add choice to the high street” as what they would like to see at the ground floor. This was closely followed by “Artisan food market – with space for independent stallholders or a bakery and café”.
- Residents expressed concerns over the potential height of the development and the relationship with the surrounding area.
- Questions about the car-free aspects of the development and how this might impact traffic, parking and nearby roads.
Our response to your feedback:
- The proposals for the ground floor space have been tailored to cater to an independent retailer, specialist shop or an Artisan food market alongside the community space.
- In 2020 the proposals were planned to be between 10 and 13 storeys. In direct response to feedback from the Council, local stakeholders and residents, the plans have been revised to propose a maximum height of 9 storeys, stepping down to 5 storeys along Cambridge Road and 3 storeys on the high street.
- We understand the concerns around parking and have assessed parking in the local area. Furthermore, future residents would be prevented from applying for parking permits should a Controlled Parking Zone be introduced.
