Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Lambeth

PLANNING APPLICATION SUBMITTED

A  planning application for the expansion of the hospital building has been submitted to the London Borough of Lambeth.

Since the children’s hospital opened in 2005, the number of children and young people being cared for from London and across the south-east has more than doubled. A bigger hospital will mean even more children and young people can be treated, and more leading treatments developed. More care will also be provided for the growing number of children with complex conditions, and it will allow the hospital to bring more services together in one place.

It will also provide space to expand specialist heart and lung services as, subject to consultation, children’s services will move from Royal Brompton Hospital to an expanded Evelina London in around five to six years.

The planning application is now live on the London Borough of Lambeth’s website. You can view the proposals by entering the planning reference 21/01869/FUL into the planning portal’s search function through the link below.

We wanted to thank everyone who has contributed to our plans for the proposed new building to date and would welcome any supportive comments you may be willing to offer as part of the council’s planning application consultation period..

BACKGROUND

As you may know, the existing Evelina London Children’s Hospital opened on the St Thomas’ site in 2005 bringing the children’s hospital services at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals together under one roof.

We care for more than 100,000 children and young people each year. We are the local children’s hospital for South East London and we also provide an extensive range of specialist services for children with rare and complex conditions who come from London and the South East and – for some rare conditions – around the UK and the world.

THE PARTNERSHIP

In July 2020, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust appointed Linkcity, the development arm of Bouygues UK, as their preferred partner for the delivery of the new Evelina London Children’s Hospital building.

THE EMERGING PROPOSALS

We will be working alongside award-winning architects Hawkins Brown to deliver:

  • Additional state-of-the-art facilities, enabling Evelina London to treat even more of the sickest and the most complex patients.
  • A new building of architectural merit taking cues and references from the surrounding area.
  • New high-quality planting and landscaping along Lambeth Palace Road and the surrounding hospital site.
  • Creation of new jobs and training opportunities for local residents.

We want to thank everyone who shared their feedback and contributed to our plans. In the coming months, we will be submitting a planning application to the London Borough of Lambeth.

There will be a further opportunity to share your views during the statutory consultation, we would welcome any comments you feel able to offer as part of this process.

Once the application is validated you will be able to find the reference on our website and you can comment on the final proposals via Lambeth’s planning portal.

You can find the presentation from our public webinar on the 4th March 2021 linked here. Please note that these plans are still subject to change arising from design development, input from statutory stakeholders, and the planning determination process.

If you would like to see how our plans have evolved you can find a recording of one of our initial presentations from earlier in our engagement timeline. This was shared in November of last year.
